Seven months ago, I announced that Standard Notes had joined forces with Proton, the Swiss organization renowned for its end-to-end encrypted email service Proton Mail, as well as Proton VPN, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass.
After we announced our partnership with Proton, some of you had questions about what that would mean for the future of our services.
We’re here to say that, as promised, Standard Notes remains a distinct, healthy business with a community of tens of thousands of paying customers directly supporting its development. Our team is here, growing, and committed to continually enhancing your experience.
Proton and Standard Notes grow together
This partnership felt natural because, like Standard Notes, Proton is a mission-focused, community-led organization committed to protecting your right to privacy and keeping your personal information secure. We felt that together, we’d be better situated to build a private-by-default internet where freedom of expression thrives without fear of government surveillance or big-tech exploitation.
This intuition has already proven correct. Proton’s expertise contributes significantly to the Standard Notes experience. With Proton’s support, we have been able to reach an even broader privacy-focused audience and continue to build our community.
Proton has also helped us harden our architecture to be more secure and resilient. By leveraging the expertise of Proton’s anti-abuse team, Standard Notes has implemented measures that secure against DDoS attacks and drastically reduce the incidence of bad actors consuming resources that could degrade the experience of real users. This means a smoother, more reliable experience for you. During this period of hardening and improving reliability, we were not able to ship many new features, but this step was essential to ensure that we build the future on a rock-solid foundation that can last for decades.
Standard Notes is now hiring and expanding
Moving forward, we’ll continue to develop new features that keep Standard Notes the best place for you to write your thoughts out without being monitored. Also, we’re excited to announce that we’re hiring. A new engineering position is opening to accelerate release cycles and enhance your experience with Standard Notes. If you’re passionate about privacy and have the skills to contribute, we’d love to hear from you.
As always, your feedback matters immensely to us. Effie from our team is ready to hear your ideas, so please keep those feature requests coming. Standard Notes will always keep your information private and always protect your ability to think, write, and act without surveillance.
Thank you for being a part of the Standard Notes community.
